BBQ rights! (14 Nov 09)

November is our Birthday celebration month, where we have so many of our family members celebrating their birthday. The latest one is last Saturday, where we attended the birthday party for Huiyin & Huikai. I am still processing the photos and will post that up later for viewing, but I would just like to relate an incident that happened that day.

A BBQ was planned for the family after the birthday party. This is at the condo of Kok Hwa's eldest brother. The place is new , has great landscaping, nice pools, facilities and BBQ pits available. Anyway, BBQ pit 1 was booked for our use. However, upon arriving at the place, there was already someone using the pit. Apparently, there was a double booking for pit 2, so the group who came over later, decided to take over our pit and started BBQing! They refused to leave initially when Joey & Kok Hwa approached them. The security guard was also called in to discuss the matter. After much discussion, the other group agreed to go to another BBQ pit further away, but requested for help to move their stuff. The security guard agreed and got the cleaners to help them move. When the cleaner got there, the other group decided that they don't actually want to move, and the lady just stayed there and continued to BBQ her food. Our group was left with standing by some distance away, discussing with the security guard and waiting for the other group to move.

I got there later, as I was helping to move some of our BBQ stuff from the function room to the pit, and I was getting the mee siam ready in the function room. After finding out the situation, I decided that we would move our stuff over to the BBQ pit no.1 and get ready to cook. I told the others to help out or stand nearer to the other group, who is doing the cooking. I just grabbed our dry box and put it on the counter beside the pit, ignoring the lady who is doing the cooking. While we started getting the stuff ready, the lady decided to pack up her food and left the area. Our BBQ then went on without a hitch. While some of us cooked, I helped to bring the cooked food over to te function room for the others to eat.

It seems like my action cause people to think that I have become aggressive. I didn't think I am being aggressive, just asserting our right not to be bullied by others. My family members were clearly quite shocked by my actions though, as they never thought that I would do this kind of things. truth be told, before we stayed overseas, I probably wouldn't and would just wait there complaining about the other group. The other group was clearly in the wrong, as they decided to take our pits, cause their pit was double booked. The matter has nothing to do with our usage of the BBQ pit, and they should settle it with the management and the other group, instead of using our pit. They knew they were in the wrong, so they moved when we decided to take action. The time for talk is over. We really don't have to do much, except stand beside them while they are doing the cooking. They claimed that we should have started cooking earlier. Since we booked the pit, shouldn't we have the right to decide when to start cooking?
