Since coming back to Singapore, I have slowly been losing motivation to use my DSLR to capture images of our lives. Can't seem to find anything I want to use my DSLR for.
when in the UK, I contemplated getting the Nikon D90 body during the US trip (When the D90 is already launched), I was shooting almost daily. Even a walk to the bus stop to travel to campus inspires me to whip out my trusty D50 (with all its flaws and scratches). The view seems prettier, the colours more vibrant and things seen in awe and wonder as compared to the same stuff back home in Singapore. I had decided to hold back my purchases since coming back to Singapore. It doesn't seem worth it to buy it now, when I can carry out just the D50 and 1 lens the whole day out without a single shot.
Perhaps it's cause Singapore is home and so familiar to me, and here is a certain sense of dread in Singapore seeing photographers roaming the shopping centres with large DSLR? (imagine a terrorist going around with a DSLR, rather than the nowadays more sophisticated DCs which does a decent job). or perhaps there isn't much of nature to capture here, all HDB flats and concrete? perhaps I don't have the same wonder as I do during my travels? Perhaps I am more conscious of my status of not being a tourist here?
Perhaps it's because I am working weekdays; nights at home with the kids or doing housework; and weekends are busy visiting parents (fulfiling obligations) and other stuff. I don't want to spend my time going around taking photos like a tourist.
The girls have also grown up and it's more fun to capture them on video instead. Their antics are funny and memorable. I cannot be in the background anymore, as the girls wants me to paricipate with them in their activities. I also enjoy being with them more than I want to take the photos. I can just as easily use my DC NIkon L14, the simplest type of DC to capture the images and videos.
I am pragmatic enough to realise that my original interest in photography is because of travel photography and family photography. That's why most of my photographs are taken during my travel, or of the family. That's why photography will always remain a hobby to me.
Guess I will just have to get that new DSLR body (D90 or anything newer launched by then) when I have plans to travel...
