Searching for your heart’s desire (18 Jul 08)

It seemed such a coincidence that my classmate mentioned about watching "the Alchemist" some time back and found it to be quite good, and then I found the book in the library. Found the title familiar, but couldn't place it until I borrowed the book home and started reading it. That's when i realised why the author's name was so familiar and that I had heard about the book somewhere before.

The alchemist is a novel written by Paulo Coelho, a "symbolic story" about following your heart's desire and achieve your dreams. Unfortunately, I find it quite hilarious and kept shaking my head in disbelief, not that the story was funny, but the fact that the author kept quoting from the bible with regards to the things happening around the main character, Santiago, during his journey to find his treasure.

I find it quite sad though that people pick and choose what they want from the bible to serve their end, without taking the entirety of God's message. They reject what they find difficult and take what they can fit into their lifestyle. It is also a matter of pride that people reject Jesus' teaching and choose not to obey the church, thinking that they could come up with something better. It's only because they do not know Jesus or the fathers of the church and their wisdom.

All these truths were already taught by Jesus more than 2000 years ago, and the catholic church continues to preserve, witness and spread the message of God.

In Mark 6:34 "And Jesus going out saw a great multitude: and he had compassion on them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things."

Become a follower of Christ, and you won't ever get lost. You will be like one of the passengers on a huge ocean liner (the catholic church) with a compass.
