Start of Term....10 Sept 07

10 Sept 07...start of my MSc course in Water Regulations & Management at the University of Surrey. I left the house pretty early and caught the 8.57am train, so that I can get to campus early. I am supposed to be at the teaching block room 18 at 10.00am, but since this is the first day, I thought I will go early to see the campus. Anyway, I got to TB 18 at about 9.25am, but there was a class on. It can't be right, as its not supposed to start yet. I asked the lecturer at the class, but apparantly, its not for the MSc course. Perhaps they had changed the room for registration, so I made my way to find the CEHE office. I didn't know where to g, as CEHE is not on the campus map at all. I made my way to the Centre for Environmental Sustainability, but that is the wrong place. One of new staff helped to leave a message with Collette Laurens, the CEHE administrative officer whom I got in touch with earlier. She also helped me to locate the CEHE office. I made my way there and finally was told that the room was TB22, just opposite of TB18. It was about 10.30am when I got to TB22, and everyone is already there! Man, I thought I should be early.

We had a few introductions from Prof Barry Lloyd & Prof. Brian Clark. It sounds exciting with lots of work in research areas and with relief agencies. Alot of our professors are from external agencies too, so we get alot more practical sharing too.

My classmates are from various background, and everyone is nice and friendly, from varied experiences and background, engineering to chemist to ecologist to public health inspectors. Quite alot had been working in the field for quite some time. This makes the sharing of experiences quite interesting and exciting.

We also had a tour of the library and the campus, as well as a welcome dinner for MSc students from the School of Engineering. There were also MSc students from the bridge engineering MSc course, as well as all the professors.

I left campus about 6.30pm
